We’ve previously learned that the world’s blue zone regions such as Japan, Greece, Italy, are home to populations with higher than average life expectancies. Hongkonger’s are not located in the blue zone however we have seen that the people here have similar longevity patterns and contributing factors as those locations,
Surprisingly, the already high life expectancy of Hong Kong’s population saw a surge in numbers in 2024 after the pandemic. In particular, the life expectancy of women has reached its height in 2024 and 2025, living to an average age of 88.4 years and men to 82.8 years–putting Hong Kong ahead of Japan and South Korea for overall life expectancy.
Despite the high-pressure lifestyles of this city, Hong Kong’s healthy aging, safe environment, walkable infrastructure, and comprehensive healthcare system parallel those observed in blue zones.
Key factors for longevity
- Strong family connections, social networks and active community involvement
- High quality healthcare, offering affordable healthcare to all
- Robust neonatal and childhood maternal care, resulting in healthy early years (Hong Kong’s infant mortality rate is among the lowest in the world)
- Access to fresh produce, wide availability of healthy local cuisine
- Many older Hong Kongers were originally migrants of mainland China, who often possess high resilience, physical fitness for overcoming difficult circumstances
- The subtropical climate reduces seasonal mortality rates found in other colder, harsher environments
With greater awareness towards fitness, nutrition and overall health, a shift in less alcohol consumption in the next generation, and continuous advancements in healthcare and technology, we are preparing to live longer, better lives ahead.
