Hong Kong to Catch a Blood Moon Again in September 2025

Hongkongers, keep your eyes peeled in early September for a red glowing orb with orange hues in the sky. It’s a chance to experience a ‘blood moon’ or a total lunar eclipse.

The last time this occurrence happened in Hong Kong was in November 2022. This happens when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and Moon, causing its shadow to fully cover the full moon. The filtering of sunlight through the Earth’s atmosphere is what gives the blood moon its color. Perfect alignment from most full moons are missed due to the moon’s orbit being slightly tilted, but when they do, a dramatic and striking blood moon eclipse is revealed.

See the details below to find out more information on how you might be able to catch a glimpse of this infrequent sighting. See you under the stars!

When: Sunday, September 7th 2025; starting from 11:26pm and continuing into the early morning of next day

Where: Witness the event via a webcast webpage (hosted by HK Observatory / HK Space Museum), or head to locations with open areas and clear views to see with your naked eyes or grab your binoculars

Viewing spot suggestions for astronomy enthusiasts:

-waterfronts such as Tai Hang Tun, High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay Country Park

This Corn Moon (a September full moon) will be visible from Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia.

Things to note: Totality (when the Moon is completely in Earth’s shadow) to occur around 1:30 am on September 8th 2025.

The next total lunar eclipse will fall on March 3, 2026.
