It’s time to rethink those gel manicures, the go-to for glamorous, long lasting nails. Following the latest findings on TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide), a key ingredient found in gel nail polish, the EU has now banned it from being manufactured, sold, and commercially used, effective from September 1, 2025.
TPO’s main function is that it helps aid the curing and hardening process of gel polish when exposed to UV or LED lamps. The result is a durable finish that can last for weeks, making them appealing to many.
A number of studies have highlighted its potential dangers due to its hazardous properties. The negative effects of TPO are based on animal studies which show fertility issues and hormonal disruption, however at very high doses.
The ingredient could be harmful to both the customer and the nail technician if exposure is significant. Though the risk is low and the occasional gel manicure may cause immediate problems, it’s best to avoid it all together for long term nail and overall health if you’re concerned.
This ban has raised significant discussion and awareness, reflecting the increasing safety concerns on TPO’s potential to cause cancer and reproductive harm, marking a vital shift in nail care standards.
Many of us are left wondering, what safe alternatives can we use instead? Don’t worry, you can still glam up those nails. Here are some glossy swaps to try.
BIAB (Builder In A Bottle)
- Developed to strengthen, structure, and aid natural nail growth over time. Applied like gel but with the durability of a builder, creating a protective shield for weaker and brittle nails. Look for TPO-free gels.
TPO-free gel polish
- Delivering the same glossy effect but uses safer photoinitiators. Well known brands include Manicurist Green Flash and OPI, which offer TPO-free gels and polish.
Bio-sourced gel polish
- A gentle, TPO-free option on your nails and skin, with the traditional removal method as regular polish.
Dip powder
- The lesser known method involves dipping the nails in colored powder requiring no LED curing. Remember to look for TPO-free brands.
